Music Ensembles

AT FPC SALEM

Although our choirs and ensembles will not be rehearsing for the foreseeable future, we will be providing some opportunities to connect online. Many of our choirs operate as small groups that care about each other and pray with each other. Perhaps we can find ways to lift each other up and minister to each other in creative ways. We will be working as a staff to record music which will be included with the worship offered through the church website.

The Haviland Choir is a volunteer ensemble consisting of adult members, open to vocalists, high school age and above.  The choir requires no audition, and rehearses weekly on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m.  The Haviland Choir also assembles at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings for a brief rehearsal.

The Haviland Choir performs weekly worship services at First Presbyterian from early September through early June.  Two special presentations are offered yearly during Advent and in May during the worship services.  The Advent and May services may include instrumentalists and guest vocalists.  Special music is provided during the summer months, include solos and ensembles.

Church Bells

Handbell choirs have been an important part of our music ministry since the first bells were purchased in the mid 1960s.  We have five octaves of Schulmerich handbells and handchimes used by ringers of all ages. Due to the pandemic, we currently have one handbell choir, the Carillon Ringers, which is open to adults and high schoolers.  When restrictions are lifted, we hope to resume handbell and chime choirs for children and youth.  Rehearsals are at 6 on Wednesday evenings

Children's vocal and chime choirs are currently suspended. Rehearsals for children's vocal and chime groups are held Wednesday afternoons during Pres-Bees midweek program when pandemic restrictions are lifted.  Young singers and ringers are taught the basics of reading music and no prior musical training is required.

To enable the long-awaited return from the pandemic devastation, a new "speech choir" was first added Mother's Day, 2021.  Scripture, poems, writings, etc. are recited in unison by "speech choir" members.   Members are recruited without need for audition or experience.  Anyone desiring fellowship and a unique way to worship our Lord is welcome.  Speech gifts to the church services may include visual aids, dance, skits, and/or anything they may enhance the recited interpretation of the writings. Anyone interested in joining the speech fellowship may call the church office or Brenda Bradley at 330-853-1764.
