Director of Music
John Krauss
I am the Director of Music here at First Presbyterian. I was born in Salem, graduated from Salem High School in 1969, and hold a Bachelor of Music Education, Master of Tuba Performance and Elementary Certification from Youngstown Sate University. My teaching career of 35 years includes employment for Warren City (Warren Western Reserve), Minerva and Salem City Schools, as instrumental music instructor. I've been an adjunct instructor at Hiram College, Youngstown State and Mount Union. I've also served as Director of Music at Church Hill United Methodist in Liberty, Emmanuel Lutheran in Warren along with my current position at FPC Salem.
I've also held the position of principal tuba in the Youngstown & Canton Symphonies, and currently perform with the W.D. Packard Band in Warren. I also conduct the Youngstown Saxon Band - a touring organization that's performed in Germany, Austria and Romania. I'm also a member of the National Association of Music Education and The Ohio Music Education Association, serving as adjudicator of Solo-Ensemble events the past several years.

I am privileged to be the custodian here at First Presbyterian Church since 2010 after 40 yrs with GM Corp. My family and I are also part of FPC congregation. I really enjoy working for and with the congregation of FPC and mostly raising my own congregation at home.

Administrative Secretary
Phyllis Garlock
I am blessed to be the Administrative Secretary at First Presbyterian Church of Salem since 1984. Although I am not a member of FPC, I am definitely a part of the church family.
I reside in Alliance with my husband, Dave. We have two sons Kevin, his wife Renee and Darren, his wife Tami and 3 grandsons Cooper, Cole, and Camden.
I enjoy jigsaw puzzles, devotional yoga, playing the piano, riding a bicycle, and going for walks.

Organist
Nancy Boyd McNeal
Music has been a major part of my life since I was a child. Living in Youngstown until Junior High School, I took and continued piano lessons with Frances Steffan for 12 years. I continued my studies at the Dana School of Music earning my degree with a major in Piano and a minor in organ to earn my Bachelor's in Music. With my experience as an organist at Emanuel Lutheran Church and Episcopal Church of Our Savoir in Salem, experience as an accompanist for many additional organizations, and my substituting at St. Paul’s Catholic Church.
I currently have held my position as organist at First Presbyterian Church since January of 1985 following many marvelous organists that served before.

Director, Handbells/Youth Choirs
Cheryl McDevitt
My involvement with the First Presbyterian Church music program began in 1979 when I was asked to direct the Carol Choir (grades 1,2,3). Since that time I have served as director of children's vocal choirs, as well as adult and children's handbell and chime choirs. I have also been a member of the Haviland Choir since the mid-1980s.
